Governor Pawlenty must think of us...(Minnesota's citizens) as very small minded, self indulgent people. Apparently, the Governor assumes that all we think about is keeping our money.
His speech yesterday, had no vision, no broad plan, no inspiration for future generations. It was an admission that the people of this state are somehow not up to any more challenges....it is as if we will be lucky to simply hold on to the status quo.
On transportation -- borrow. Our kids must pay for the problems we have created. Veto threats are not a method of compromise....and holding up red pens is more symbolic of "red ink" than veto power.
On Health Care -- defining problems, but unwilling to boldly seek solutions. Yes, we need to make health care more affordable but we don't do it with commissions or discussions. In his speech, Pawlenty said:
The heart of the reform is to improve health care productivity and quality by restoring the relationship between doctors and patients. These days it seems the exam room is crowded with accountants, lawyers and administrators.
So eliminate those accountants, lawyers, and administrators altogether....move boldly into single payer health care.
Regarding Education -- The conclusion is.... education needs more help, but we will only do things that don't cost money. Yes, we need teachers to lead the way and thank God they are doing just that, despite no help from this administration.
On Environment -- Here...a proposal:
This year, I'm asking the Legislature to approve up to 20 million dollars in revenue bonds to fund low interest loans for communities to encourage the installation of micro energy technologies such as home-based solar, next-generation windmills, geothermal heating, and other renewable energy sources.
Again, not real investment -- loans. Individuals making it happen and paying it back. Will the Governor propose the state's infrastructure set the example? Probably not -- it requires real money.
Tax Reform:The governor defines, yet another problem. Our tax system is broken and the answer is....another commission. The real truth here is, it doesn't matter what kind of tax system you use, it will never work unless you actually collect taxes. We need more revenue.... changing tax systems is not going to somehow change the needs.

The Governor can give a good speech. And he can pretend that the problems of this state can somehow go away on their own. But that isn't leadership... that is avoidance.
In the past, the State of Minnesota has been a model for other states to emulate. We have lost that. But, we still have that inner corps that can change all that. We have a vibrant research community; strong health care institutions ready to get to work; and a powerful agricultural engine ready to feed the world. But, it all needs leadership. Leadership willing to provide the investment that can power those economic engines poised to move into the future.
This State can and must move ahead....with or without its Governor.
