The ignorance that emanates from the mouth of Michele Bachmann is astounding. Just when you think she can't stretch the bounds of dimwitted, irresponsible, puerile, inane, insensate, doltish, imbecilic, and ludicrous statements... we get this:
"The big thing we are working on now is the global warming hoax. It's all voodoo, nonsense, hokum, a hoax," Bachmann said. "The tax cap and trade system for limiting emissions is just another tax on businesses. By 2012, incandescent light bulbs will be no more. Fluorescent bulbs are more polluting because of their mercury content. We are working on the light bulb bill. If the Democrats can hose up a light bulb don't trust them with the country."
-- West Sherburne Tribune 3/15/08
I would venture a guess that Michele Bachmann has never investigated the scientific principles that involve global warming. In fact, I'm not sure she knows the differences between ozone and a tow zone.
Yet, she is willing to risk the future of the entire planet by declaring scientific research on the matter as simply a hoax.
As for the tax cap and trade system....maybe she would prefer straight mandated caps with government sanctions? The cap and trade system is a means to ease the burden on business. Allow them an option if they can't meet necessary deadlines for standards.
But, then I forgot. Bachmann doesn't think capping emissions is even necessary. She doesn't consider greenhouse gases a problem...it's all a part of the "natural order" of things. Must be in the Bible somewhere.
And then there is fluorescent light bulbs. Let's try to talk about real facts and not Bachmann speak. This is from "fact sheets" from the Vermont Dept. of Health and Environmental Coservation:
A trace amount of mercury is contained in each fluorescent light bulb, less than 5mg. The amount of mercury in a CFL (Compact Fluorescent Light bulb) is 1/5 the amount in a watch battery. Mercury is commonly found in thermostats and button cell batteries. Older household thermometers contain about 500 milligrams of mercury. It would take over 100 fluorescent light bulbs to equal that amount.
The largest source of mercury pollution in the environment is from burining fossil fuels such as coal, the most common fuel used to produce electricity in the U.S. A coal burning power plant releases 10mg of mercury into the environment in order to produce the electricity to run an incandescent bulb in comparison to only 2.4mg of mercury to run a CFL for the same length of time.
Another stubborn fact:
No mercury is released when CFL's are in use. The risk of exposure to mercury from the occasional broken CFL bulb is very small. Using CFL's reduces the amount of mercury in the environment by reducing the amount of electricity that power companies need to produce.
It is embarrassing that Minnesota has to admit that Michele Bachmann represents a state that is theoretically on the cutting edge of science and innovation. Truly embarrassing.
