Pawlenty and the Scrutiny of A VP Candidate

by Dave Mindeman

As the speculation continues to grow about the possibility of Gov. Pawlenty becoming John McCain's VP selection, there are many different ramifications to consider.

One of the things that I haven't heard much about is the damage a national campaign personna could do to a teflon coated and deflection shielded Minnesota Governor.

First, the national press are not going to be so "charmed" away by the little quips Pawlenty always has at the ready. They won't just use "that's just politics" as an excuse not to answer his critics. They won't hesitate to scrutinize every aspect of the Governor's life. His ties to telecom will get a much closer examination. His campaign finance fines will get a new look. His management of MnDOT, Public Health, and JOBZ programs will get some fresh digging. And boy, is all of that way overdue.

Secondly, Pawlenty can't just walk away from the press anymore. He can't just dismiss questions he considers irrelevant. National press expect answers and if they don't get them, they find out the reason why. Those condescending and dismissive looks and waves of the hand don't end the conversation anymore. No, if Governor Pawlenty ascends to the national stage, his relationship with the press will change dramatically.

Third, the I-35 Bridge will get a more serious and much deserved investigation as the national stage demands a closer look at the executive decisions of a Vice Presidential candidate. Is Pawlenty fully confident that there is nothing there?

Be careful what you wish for, Governor.

Ron is correct. Ultra-conservative Palin of Alaska gets the nod. Boy, is McCain going to regret this huge gaffe. She may be the darling of the far right wing of the party, but she will not play well in the lower 48, or Hawaii. This guarantees that Obama/Biden will capture all the states the Democrats won in 2000 and 2004. Just toss in one more state, any state, and this race is done.
