Shelley Madore Set To Challenge Kline in 2nd District

by Dave Mindeman

Well...it looks like John Kline may have a new challenger for his Congressional seat. There have been rumors floating around and I got confirmation yesterday that former State Representative Shelley Madore of Apple Valley is about to throw her hat into the 2nd District ring.

She would join Dan Powers, Burnsville, as a candidate for the DFL endorsement for the 2nd District Congressional seat.

Democrat Madore broke a long standing Republican stranglehold of the District 37A legislative seat in 2006. In fact, she broke a lot of barriers for Democrats in the South Metro, finding a way to win in a perceived conservative district. She lost her bid for re-election in 2008, by a narrow margin, to a heavily financed challenger, Tara Mack.

When she was elected in 2006, she quickly became a driving force for transportation issues in the south metro area....something that may run as a strong campaign theme in her 2010 bid.

Congressman Kline has received a lot of criticism for his refusal to bring needed projects to the 2nd District making the claim that they are simply pork barrel projects. County Commissioners just call them necessities.

Not to take anything away from Dan Powers, but Madore is a proven vote getter in her legislative district. And she is an established progressive voice as well.

A Congressional run will be a big challenge for Madore but there are plenty of signs for enthusiastic support already.

Game on.

Is this really the best we can do? I voted for Madore - she was my legislator. She didn't return calls, was late for meetings and generally seemed disorganized. Even if she had won against Tara Mack, what makes her ready for national office? Surely not the single term I saw.

I still live here and I'm really disappointed in the state of our district. The only chance anyone has of unseating Kline is to find a real leader that can rally both the progressives and the few moderates around. In my limited experience with Madore she's a divider, not a uniter. The sentiment on my block is that this is bad news for our neighborhood and a nice Christmas gift for John Kline.

I had the chance to work with Shelley Madore on a couple of issues just before and while she served in the legislature. She is dynamic and creative. I believe that she could be a very strong candidate, and she would be an excellent Rep for the 2nd District. After several fairly poor candidates, I am very excited about her getting in the game.

Nobody defeats an incumbent unless they work hard. It was true when Madore defeated Cybart (06) and it was also true when Mack defeated Madore (08). Before you whine about the money being spent, you should note that progressives spent far more money than conservatives in that race. Characterizing Rep. Mack as nothing but a "25 year old secretary" is sexist and demeaning. I expect better from the progressive movement.

Regardless, I wish Ms. Madore good luck in her candidacy. Ms. Madore is certainly a more authentic candidate than Mr. Powers.

Evan. I sugest before you comment on the race between Shelley Madore and Tara Mack you take a look at the Campaign Finance Board and the amount of money spent on behalf of Mack and against Madore. Further I challenge you to view the attack mailers that were sent on bahalf of Tara Mack. Then compare that to the money spent on behalf of Madore. Anyone who has spent time campaigning in the south metro knows how hard to win in this area and when the republicans pull out all the stops yes even a 25 year old secetary can win.

The skids were greased -- heavily -- by the Republican Party for Rep. Mack in '08. Simply put, they were extremely cheesed by having lost to Madore in '06, and they tossed the kitchen sink and everything else at her to win in '08. They would have done so regardless of who their candidate was.

The more the merrier in MN-02. Shelley has a great story and a solid political foundation -- if she's moving toward challenging Kline then the endorsement race should garner a bit more attention. This is a good thing.

She lost to a 25 year old Republican who was barely put in front of a microphone. How is that a proven vote getter? I like how progressive she is on the issues, but you have to think general here-there is no way that she could crack 40% against Kline. Not after the campaign that was thrown at her in her re-election.
