Sen. Jim Carlson & The Gang Running Against Him

by Dave Mindeman

State Senator Jim Carlson should work for Target -- because he has that red and white circle on his back.

Four, count 'em, four Republicans have filed for the opportunity of running against Sen. Carlson in November. Gosh, you would think that job is a gold mine!

I was looking over the websites of this quadrangle of opposition. It made for a good read. Briefly....

Rob Lambert: This guy had a job as a professional fund-raiser. How convenient is that? And currently is a rep for medical device firm. He has roots in southern Minnesota working for Gil Gutknecht. He notes that he is a life long member of Hosanna Lutheran Church in Lakeville....the church that broke from the ELCA over its dispute with the synod over gay clergy. In regards to issues, this is another guy who doesn't seem to like details. Wants funding for education but magically pay for it with tax cuts again. As to health care, he praises the current system (best in the world) but no ideas or changes or cost efficiency offered. On his photo page, he doesn't have much either...a) a picture of him and Gil Gutknecht, b) a picture of him talking on a cell phone while driving (ahem), and c) waterskiing???

Mike Kaess: Kaess makes some "bold" statements on his website. In one paragraph he says, "For the past 14 years I have been a Business Development Manager and all postions in Minnesota." Apparently he worked his way up the ranks of United Parcel Service. Later in his introduction he says, "I believe that my experience in the global business world, for the past 30 years, has given me the knowledge and ability to help correct our current government." I find that puzzling -- global experience from a UPS white board? He talks about how progressive taxation of wealth and corporate taxes has failed (umm, is he talking about current tax policy?)

Ted Daley: New "kid" on the block. This guy has a long military history. West Point graduate. Deployed all over the world. Served in Iraq in 2008. Back to Eagan in 2009. Nothing wrong with that...thank him for his service. Not a lot of information and not much for new ideas. Little bit bland -- but hey, he just got started.

But the rest of our discussion will focus on David Carlson.

First -- no relation. Second, this guy seems to be shopping himself around looking for the right place to get into the legislature. He ran in 2008 in District 67B in East St. Paul. That's a pretty Democratic area and he lost badly.

But now he pops up in Eagan and although he says he is running for the endorsement, his intro clearly says this: David hopes to earn your support and your vote in the primary election September 14, 2010. Sounds like he will be in the primary regardless.

D.Carlson is also a fan of Twitter. Although a lot of his entries show his love for the Vikings, he throws some interesting off the cuff remarks as well. When the failed Christmas bomb attack was going on, Mr. D. Carlson threw in his desire to use "waterboarding". (Carlson has a long history in the military). But his biggest controversy with Twitter came when he re-tweeted a post that included a racial slur. The MNPUBLIUS blog couldn't let that pass without comment. I won't dignify it with a copy of what it said but you can see the screen shot here.

Now I'm going to be fair. This was a retweet from somebody else. D. Carlson did not write this himself. But then again, what was the value in repeating it? Especially to make some kind of attempt at defending Rush Limbaugh? Really?

Mr. D. Carlson felt the need to engage a defense on the MNPUBLIUS blog site --here is his first comment post:

I retweeted a comment encouraging President Obama to “take care of” Rush Limbaugh in Hawaii. I found it offensive and troubling, as we don’t kill off political opponents. By retweeting it, I wanted to draw attention to the death wishes that were being levied against a private citizen who had chest pains and was admitted to the ER. My subsequent tweets also discussed that point.

As someone who graduated from Johnson High School on the East Side of Saint Paul, played on an all black basketball team, and has coached the summer program there, which happened to also be all black, I find it rather disingenuous to try and label me a racist. Perhaps, you should go ask the team that I helped receive a $2,000 grant for this season if they think I am a racist.

And for the record, the comment is still on my twitter as I didn’t take it off because I didn’t see anything wrong with retweeting it then, and I don’t today. Again, because I retweeted the comment, that does not mean that I CONDONE OR ENDORSE the comment. I simply wanted to expose wishes of death towards someone that I found a bit shocking and quite frankly, I was surprised at them. And for the record, I am not a “birther.”

Sincerely,

David J. Carlson

Hmmm, the phrase "me thinks he doth protest too much" comes to mind....but I digress.

Now I suspect what D. Carlson is saying is true. He is not condoning or endorsing what was said. However, since Twitter is a public forum, why repost this trash at all? It questions Mr. Carlson's judgment if nothing else.

But that is not the entire picture here either.

During that 2008 election in 67B, D. Carlson's campaign also drew the attention of the MNPUBLIUS blog with some questionable campaign literature. I would encourage you to examine the posting and the literature in question HERE.

The fear tactic involved with this is deeply troubling. Nobody, I mean nobody, is "soft" on violent crime. Legislative votes on public safety issues are always full of potential complications as well as funding problems. To try and link violent crimes to votes on public safety funding is a vulgar tactic. Republicans have resorted to this tactic way too often and to me it is detestable.

(As for the discussion about "doctoring" the photo...well, I will just leave that to your own judgment.)

If Mr. D. Carlson wants a vigorous discussion of the issues, I am sure Senator Jim Carlson is ready to become fully engaged. But if his district has to be subjected to "more of the same" in unfair attacks and distortions, then, please, Mr. David Carlson, save it all for your twitter account.

I noticed you did not share with the group what he was in court for today....funny. You just wanted to mention he was there and not the reason why...

When I check myself nothing comes up also. I personally have never even been pulled over for speeding, not even a parking ticket on my record. Does that make me a saint? No it does not. But at least I do not attack a person's morality in the shadows of the internet where you can hide behind a computer screen. Show the proof or shut your damn mouth. Making assumptions and generalizations about people is pretty childish.

Oh and Corra, when I check myself in the criminal and civil records there is nothing, as there are for most of us law abiding citizens. and by the way I had "fun" in college also without driving while intoxicated.

02/01/10 17:24
First of all, I called it his criminal record because that is what it is called.

There are five records in is criminal file, more in his civil. The wreckless driving was a plea bargain down from a DWI.

Yea, perhaps we should focus on electing candidates like Carlson who had a lot of "fun while they were in college", oh and by the way took our childrens lives in their hands by driving while intoxicated. Classy.

Again "He who hath no sin, cast the first stone" Attilla.

And yes you are lying and exaggerating. In your comments you lead the reader to believe that he has multiple serious felonies or something when in actuality there is only one ticket of wreckless driving on his "criminal record" as you love to call it. I hardly think that deserves to be grouped in the same category as criminals! The personal attacks on ones family need to end....how would you feel if someone did the same to your family? Why don't you focus on what a person stands for instead of how much fun they had while they were in college.

Mr David James Carlsons past is a clear pattern of very recent wreckless behavior. Heck, he was scheduled to be in court today! Just the kind of guy we don't want with his hands on the ship of state.

Politicians have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar or or body parts where they should not be forever.

The "politics of personal destruction" is a relatively more recent occurrence perfected by Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. These are completely made up stories with no basis in reality. Such as:

The smearing of soldier Max Cleland who was a parapalegic from his war wounds.

The swiftboating of War veteren Senator Kerry.

Obama is a muslim.

Obama is not a US citizen, etc.

Always interesting that Republican criminal records morph into "youthful indiscretions" as you put it.

Attilla,
Being that I am not running in this campaign I do not need your wish of luck but thank you anyways for your kindness. The politics of personal destruction and constant bickering is exactly what people are sick and tired of hearing. Who cares about someone's youthful indiscretions. If we had a "100%" meter of who could run for office then we would have nobody there for we are all humans and nobody is perfect. If this is the best you can find on an opponent then you must really be worried about the election. David's past pales in comparison to these others:

Senator Ted Kennedy: Is driving so intoxicated that he puts a young woman through the windshield and dies; then he runs for President and is hailed a liberal Messiah.

Senator Larry Craig: Foot tapping in the bathroom but bashing homosexuals and preaching morality....

Governor Elliot Spitzer "Client #9": Bringing his call girl down to DC on a train to avoid detection, but railing against prostitution and playing the morality card.

Governor Mark Sanford: Flying to Argentina to see his gf, while he is supposed to be governing South Carolina.

Senator John Edwards: Cheating on his wife dying of cancer, getting caught in the hotel bathroom, having a love child, covering it up, and now having a sex tape.

Rod Blagojevich: Selling off senate seats to the highest bidder, yet railing against corruption.

Reverend Jesse Jackson: Stealing money out of the Rainbow Coalition Fund to support his love baby who he kept quite and out of his life until she was a young woman.

Governor Jim McGreevey: Cheating on his wife in the Governors mansion with a gay Israeli poet, then humiliating her and bringing her on stage...

The list goes on and on of corrupt politicians who preach to us one moment and the next are robbing us blind.

So step up to the plate and get in line Attilla for I am sure your past is free of skeletons. "Let he hath no sin, cast the first stone."

Nice false dichotomy "Corra". We all support and honor our men and women in uniform for their service to our nation.

Feel free to check out David James Carlson's criminal and civil record then get back to us , OK?

Are you saying the public record is inaccurate?

By the way, the buzz is that Mr. Carlson is none too popular among Eagan Republicans, otherwise he would not have drawn three Republican opponents.

Good luck with the campaign, "Corra".

Atilla,
Way to show support and gratitude for one of our country's heroes. David Carlson served three tours in Iraq to ensure your freedom to make ignorant remarks and besmirch the reputation of an upstanding citizen! By you falsley attacking David here is only giving free publicity to his campaign and getting his name out even more...Obviously whoever wrote this is a bit scared of David's popularity, otherwise the effort to come up with such lies would have never been made.

01/31/10 22:52
I'll bet Mr. David James Carlson is a law and order type guy as well as firmly for the sanctity of marriage...good luck with the campaign "Larry".

01/31/10 22:24
Hi "Larry",

Who said anything about 3 DUI's?

You can look it up for yourself. For a 28 year old Republican running for state Senator, Mr. David James Carlson has an interesting criminal and civil record.

01/31/10 19:50
hey atilla "the hun"
where do you get the idea that there were 3 DUI's there is no evidence of that. you think that you can say anything and that makes it true??? show the proof or shut the hell up! you are a typical dumb ass liberal.

01/31/10 17:19
Jessica,

Are repeat DWI offenders considered violent criminals in your book? If so then maybe you should not be supporting David Carlson.

01/31/10 01:51
You're telling me that voting to free three time sex offenders from prison is not "soft on crime?"

The picture is of a pale faced white girl, with a white hand. If you want to vote against kids, in the most pedophile infested district in the state, then you deserve to be hit.

After examining the election stats, Carlson doubled votes for a Republican State House candidate- commendable on the East Side.

How come you examined the other candidates positions and websites, except for Carlson, who actually has a rather detailed website for a state candidate. He also has quite a bit of experience compared to the other candidates that you also fail to mention. What are people so scared of with this guy, he sure seems to be getting a lot of attention from you Democrats...

Perhaps he's a bit too popular, he has nearly 2,000 fans on his facebook page, more than ten times his GOP candidates and more than any state candidate or politician I can find on facebook...
