Minnesota Caucuses: DFL is Not Ready for This One

by Dave Mindeman

As we approach the zero hour for caucuses, my confidence in the ability of the DFL structure to maintain an orderly process has approached absolute zero.

The public message is ...everybody come.... with little thought regarding "how many can we process in an hour and a half". That is a question that needed to be addressed long ago, but that ship has sailed.

Because the caucus dates were moved up, school facilities did not have the time to change their regularly scheduled activities. Normal caucus procedures needed to be altered to accomodate a "binding" presidential poll. And there has never been a test of the new registration method.....(which might have worked great in regular caucus years, but this year is nowhere near regular).

So, be prepared for some frustration and lines and confusion.

And be prepared for a late night for posting results. Good luck, DFL, you will need it!

Progressivechurchlady is only marginly correct if we can expect the kind of turnout we saw this year at the next caucus, and having attended caucuses for the past 20 years that is certainly not a given. We would end up spending huge amounts of money on a primary for no good reason and then we would lose the party-building aspects of the caucus. This arm chair quarterbacking by people who don't know how this process is suppose to work is not helpful.

Didn't this past caucus teach us that we need a "regular" primary?! Caucuses are nice community builders, but in the city and suburbs they just don't work! If the DFL wants to hold onto caucuses, they better be prepared to fund them! The caucus process demands multiple sites. The only way to accommodate gathering votes from tens of thousands of citizens in 120 minutes along with conducting meaningful discussions about serious issues requires not only physical space, but parking space and traffic control!

Well, don't be worried about us. As Chair of the Winona County DFL Party, I can attest that our party unit has worked for weeks, ensuring that every one of our convenors has had a 2 hr training on procedurs and plenty of materials and ballots. We are also providing an entirely new level of support staff for our convenors tonight. Specifically, we have multiple site coordinators at each of the 8 sites where our 48 precincts are meeting, and all our convenors have their cell phone #'s. When problems arise, these very experienced folks will go from room to room, providing backup as needed.

This is a far cry from past practice, but special times call for special preparations. We are pumped, and very ready to welcome our new members to the DFL party.

Dave,

I'm convening the SD60, 8-7 precinct tonight. Yes, we're expecting heavy turnout. I think we're prepared as we can be. I'll be blogging about it. So come on over and check out how it goes at mnblue. I likely won't live blog as the church we're in doesn't have wifi.
