Meryl Streep Spoke To Our Deepest Core Values

Category: Donald Trump

by Dave Mindeman

Meryl Streep gave an eloquent and timely political speech at the Golden Globes last night. As with most things these days, how you feel about what she said, will depend on which side of the partisan wall you reside.

But it is hard to fault that speech if you believe in empathy. If you believe in respect for human dignity. If you believe in compassion.

The core of her speech was not just a critique of Donald Trump...although she did not shy away from that even though she refused to use his name...no, it was more than that. To her, the final straw in his harsh and negative campaign was the mockery he made of a disabled reporter. For a person seeking the ultimate position of power in our society...for that person to mock and ridicule the vulnerability of a disabled person was just a bridge too far.

Of course, the typical Trump supporter will not be swayed by someone, who to them, is just another member of the "Hollywood elite". They will defend Trump...even for the indefensible. But the core of what Meryl Streep said is beyond simple politics. It is about our very basic values as human beings.

What the nation has always stood for is to be a refuge for those that cannot defend themselves. The people who want a chance to live a decent life even if they have enormous obstacles to overcome. This country has always provided a means for that type of person. We believe in opportunity. We believe in fairness. And we believe that no one gets left behind.

Donald Trump has made a mockery of those core values. He divides us based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, wealth...and yes, even on our physical appearance and abilities.

Meryl Streep said something very important last night about who we really are. Trump and his core supporters will dismiss it.

The rest of us cannot.
