We Crossed A Line Today

I have to say that I find the events surrounding the Comey hearing to be absolutely stunning. It is going to be difficult to defend the actions of Donald Trump. And when you try to elaborate on an alternative narrative, the credibility of the President vs the former FBI director is no contest.

One of the talking heads mentioned that she was stunned that during all of these conversations that Trump had with the director, not once did he show any curiousity or even comment on the broader investigation of the Russian interference in our election. All Trump was concerned about was 1) whether or not he was personally under investigation, and 2) whether or not the Michael Flynn investigation could be dropped. All personal. Nothing about the country as a whole.

And I saw some people floating this idea that since Trump does not "understand" Washington politics, that he really did not know that what he was asking was not proper. But even that argument falls flat on its face with the simple acknowledged fact that Trump asked everyone else to leave the room. If a person is unaware of the impropriety, why do that?

James Comey was credible, systematic, and stayed within the protocols and truth of the matter. It was genuine political theatre and the central character was masterful in controlling the narrative.

Trump isn't masterful at anything. He thinks with his gut and only understands a defense that requires attacking the messenger. He has used this tactic much too often and its usefulness is questionable. Especially in this situation.

We crossed a line today. This President is in serious jeopardy. And the real problem is that he is too self centered to realize it.
