Republicans Simply CANNOT Govern

Category: Donald Trump

by Dave Mindeman

Republicans have always had this mantra that government is too big. That less government is smart government.

Well, can we say mission accomplished?

Frankly, there is no government. We have a President who is more concerned about whether or not he gets "good ratings" on what he does, rather than making sure things get done properly.

Watching him in the Oval Office today giving himself a "10" on Puerto Rico... only commenting on things that were done, and totally ignoring or making excuses for the things that didn't was well, pathetic.

That's not governance. That is not being responsible. That is nothing of value.

And I have to say that it isn't just Trump that is the problem. We have a Congress that is hopeless. Even with a full Republican majority in all branches, legislation gets stalled, rendered useless, and yes, is even damaging to the American people.

And on top of all that, this "no government" concept doesn't even save any money. Trump's "plan" to stop the health care subsidies actually will add over $200 billion to the deficit. How's that for an accomplishment?

Government can work. A few years ago when Minnesota Democrats had control of state government, things worked. They set the state on a path of fiscal stability and accountability that never happened before or since.

And then Republicans took back control and, yes, you guessed it...obstruction, delays, no transparency, special session, and now lawsuits. Republicans CANNOT GOVERN.

We can only hope that people are paying attention and understanding what is going on. When Trump says that Democrats are obstructing his agenda, he can only blame his party - because THEY DO NOT NEED Democratic votes. They can operate as if they do not exist - and they pretty much do except when they cannot pass anything - then Trump looks for his scapegoat.

This is a Republican pattern. They cling to old ideas that do not work. Trickle down. Defense increases - social safety net decreases. Social policy legislation. Debt reduction based on tax cuts (which never works). They do not know how government actually works for the people it serves. They have only one constituency - the 1%, and they serve them well, while the rest of us try to figure out how to make ends meet.

If nothing else, health care is the prime example. They cannot pass the bill atrocities that they peddled earlier...and then when a bipartisan deal for fixing current issues (at least temporarily) gets officially proposed, they cannot bring themselves to allow it.

This has to end. It has to stop. This is a travesty in governance - and their is only one remedy.

Kick them out.
